When designing furniture, I am concerned with the overall presence of the piece; that it be elegantly proportioned. It must view as well from across the room as it does up close. Much of my work incorporates the shaping of curves that sooth and invite the viewer to touch. Other pieces are more architectural where the negative space is as important to the appearance as the selection of the materials.
I employ time tested joinery techniques. Machines are used when they can expedite the construction process but not when they might compromise aesthetics. I have yet to cut dovetails other than by hand. Still, today’s technology which includes modern glues, fasteners, finishes and materials allows for a wider range of creativity than was available to the old masters. Exotic veneers, leather and steel are a part of my designs. Joinery tolerances are stretched. If I can think it up, I can build it.
